Apple's New Way to Pay

Posted on October 10, 2014 Your Money 25 comments

What is Apple Pay?

Last month Apple® unveiled Apple Pay, a new feature on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch which enables consumers to use their devices to pay for goods and services. Via Apple's Passbook app, your phone or watch can become your wallet by using built-in NFC (near-field communication) technology. With this technology, consumers will be able to use the Touch ID sensor on their device to authorize point-of-sale purchases at any retailer that has NFC capabilities. Currently there are around 220,000 merchant locations in the United States that have NFC capability –that amounts to only 1.6% of the roughly 13.5 million businesses in the country.

How does Apple Pay work?

Apple announced that consumers with Apple Pay will have the capability to upload card information utilizing the iPhone's camera as well as use any existing card information from the iTunes® Store. According to Apple, each device has a Secure Element chip which stores Device Account Numbers – numbers assigned to each payment card you add to the Passbook app. These Device Account Numbers are used instead of the actual card information to promote security should your phone be lost or stolen. When you make a purchase, the Device Account Number is coupled with a transaction-specific dynamic security code that will allow the payment to process.

How does Apple Pay affect UHCU members?

The launch of Apple Pay is sure to usher in a new era of mobile payment and mobile wallet adoption. As your financial partner, United Heritage Credit Union will keep you up-to-date with the latest news regarding mobile wallets and how these mobile wallets might affect you. When Apple Pay launches it will work with your UHCU credit card. UHCU processes all debit card payments through the CO-OP Financial Services network which is currently in negotiations with Apple Pay. As soon as we receive word regarding the use of your UHCU debit card within Apple Pay, we will provide more information.

Update - April 15, 2015

UHCU was placed on an implementation list when Apple Pay first launched. CO-OP Financial Services and Apple are in control of that list and implementation scheduling. We were recently notified that the implementation process between CO-OP and Apple will begin soon. We will notify members as soon as we have a confirmed launch date. We are working diligently to make Apple Pay available to our members. Don’t forget that UHCU credit cards are already active on Apple Pay.

Update - May 29, 2015

UHCU received word from CO-OP Financial Services and Apple informing us we should anticipate launching Apple Pay midsummer. As previously noted, we will notify members as soon as we have a confirmed launch date. We appreciate your patience as we work to make Apple Pay capabilities available to our members.

Update - September 30, 2015

Are there any plans to implement Google's Android pay? Would really be a beneficial feature.

Hey! It's a little past midsummer now, any updates on this?

Quickly losing patience with this. Is there a firm ETA yet? I hate to pull the "we're going to change credit unions" threat, but it's becoming a real possibility the longer this drags on. UFCU already has apple pay.

Did you mean midsummer of 2016? Who at UHCU is representing us as members of this credit union to Apple and COOP? We need a better squeaky wheel.

Any update on getting Apple Pay for our UHCU debit cards?!!?

Matthew

Here we are now at the end of summer and still no Apple Pay. Still can't deposit checks by smartphone either. What's happening with UHCU and why such delays ?? Several other CUs in Austin already have both technologies in place. I am starting to think of UHCU as a dinosaur and maybe its time to switch banks.

My Debit Card was recently compromised and while I did get the funds back in a few days, it was still very inconvenient. Sure, fraud will continue to happen but do we really need to make it easy for the criminals ?

Not only no Apple Pay- not even a launch date.

Hello Matthew,

Thank you for your feedback and continued UHCU membership. This week, we received word from CO-OP Financial Services and Apple informing us we should anticipate launching Apple Pay midsummer. Unfortunately, fraud will continue to affect those who use payment cards until all merchants are able to process cards with EMV chips, or alternative methods of payment such as Apple Pay. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Thank you,
UHCU

Another round of debit card fraud means that your members have to visit a branch to receive a new card; change all their numbers for all their automatic debits and online payments. With Apple Pay this would not have been the case. I love UHCU but I look with envy at all my friends whose banks and CUs already have debit card Apple Pay rollout.

From CO-OP Financial Service's website:

"CO-OP has been active with both Visa and MasterCard since the introduction of Apple Pay in September to enroll its clients in the program. The company already has credit unions in the implementation validation process at Visa and MasterCard, and CO-OP expects many of its credit unions to be in the final stages of testing in December."

I think UHCU is holding us up. This is ridiculous!

In addition, we have signed a contract with a remote deposit vendor and are on the waiting list for implementation. We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as soon as they’re available.

Is there any updates to this? I've been patiently waiting for my UHCU check card to be accepted by Apple pay and be able to add it to my passbook on my iPhone 6+ but still nothing.

Bank of America has been getting pretty tempting for a switch as they already participate with Apple pay.

Come UHCU! Hurry up with getting on board with Apple pay!
