Scam Alert: Letters from TeleCheck Imposter

Posted on May 12, 2016 Security Center 0 comments

Beware of a scam in which an entity claiming to be the check-authorization and debt-collection company TeleCheck Services Inc. is sending out letters saying that recipients owe money because of failed check transactions.

TeleCheck is a Houston-based consumer reporting agency that a number of merchants use to decide whether or not to accept a consumer's check.

The letter asks recipients to call 888.263.4935, which is not a number listed on TeleCheck's website. United Heritage recommends that you do not answer or return phone calls from this number.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, if a merchant that uses TeleCheck declines a check based on TeleCheck's recommendation, the merchant must provide a notice that explains:

  • That the decision was based on information TeleCheck provided.
  • That the person has a right to obtain a free copy of what TeleCheck has on file about them.
  • How to get in touch with TeleCheck.
  • How to exercise a legal right to dispute the accuracy of the information.
If you have any questions regarding activity on your account or need to report fraud, call 512.435.4545, 903.597.7484 or 800.531.2328.

If you believe you've been the victim of fraud that involves the U.S. Mail, submit a Mail Fraud Complaint Form to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

If you believe a notice you've received from TeleCheck is a result of forgery, counterfeiting or identity theft, click here to submit a report to TeleCheck.
