FCC Warns of 'Can You Hear Me?' Scam Calls

The Federal Communications Commission is alerting the public to recent "Can you hear me?" scams in which fraudulent callers record a victim's voice over the phone. The fraudsters then use the recording to authorize unwanted charges on the victim's accounts.

The scam begins when the scammer makes a call and asks "Can you hear me?" The scammer then records the victim's response of "yes," thus obtaining a voice signature that can be used to authorize fraudulent charges on the victim's accounts.

The fraudulent callers may imitate companies that victims receiving the calls are already familiar with, such as a mortgage lender or utility company, according to reports cited by the FCC.

The FCC urges anyone who receives a "Can you hear me?" call from an unknown source to immediately hang up the phone and report the incident to the Better Business Bureau's Scam Tracker and the FCC Consumer Help Center. Anyone who has already responded to this type of call is encouraged to review their financial account statements and monitor their credit report for unauthorized activity.
