Fraudsters are illegally transferring cell phone numbers from one wireless provider to another in what are known as port-out scams.
With these scams, fraudsters illegally pose as the owner of a phone number so that they can transfer the number to a device they control and then intercept text message authentication codes from banks, credit card issuers or other companies.
Victims may not realize they've become a victim until their mobile device no longer has service and their access to important accounts is lost as fraudsters change passwords and steal money. Ways to reduce your chances of becoming a victim include:
Contacting your wireless carrier provider to add port validation and other security measures to your account.
Sharing your phone number only when necessary.
Clearing your email inbox of anything that lists an account number or password.
If you have any questions about port validation or other cell phone security measures, please contact your wireless provider.
If you have any questions about suspicious account activity or suspect fraud on your accounts, please call United Heritage Credit Union immediately at 512.435.4545, 903.597.7484 or 800.531.2328.
