Mondays are hard. Mondays during the dreary fall and winter are even harder. Adding in a long commute back to work after a weekend of fun (or even a weekend of not fun) can be a formula for the Monday blues. Getting back to the routine might be a little easier with some great tunes while you are stuck in traffic and gearing up for that Monday morning meeting you’ve been dreading. Here are a few that might just help you get ready for the day and face that overscheduled week:
10. 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton
Dolly gets it. Her ode to the hustle is more than 35 years old, but not much has changed. The tippy-tappy of the typewriter has only been changed to a softer keystroke and the added click of the mouse, but work is still work and a cup of ambition would probably do us all some good. (Also, no list about work songs would ever be complete without this bouncy tune.)
9. Under Pressure – Queen featuring David Bowie
Another throwback to the 80s, but if you’ve got an 8 AM meeting and the traffic is moving slowly, at least you’ll be in great company while fretting. Also, you’ll get a true feeling of relief when you figure out that your playlist didn’t accidentally contain “Ice, Ice Baby” once you hear Freddy Mercury’s intro. Further bonus points if you can match Mercury's falsetto.
8. Bad Dream Baby – September 87
Yeah, we didn’t know this one either, but our music guru swears by it and we’re stuck in the 80s right now. Well, sort of. Released in 2017, this song will take you back to arcades, acid washed jeans and a whole lot of hair gel. A mix of hairband ballad, synthesizer wizardry, and a wicked guitar riff, it’s worth a listen. These Australians have been quiet for a couple of years, but their limited catalog will thrill anyone who once owned a Walkman.
7. Whole Lotta Woman – Kelly Clarkson
Clarkson’s sassy tune has nothing to do with work, but she sure makes you feel like you can take on the world and we can all use a dose of confidence once in a while. Backed by members from Earth, Wind & Fire, Clarkson gets fiesty as ever and in case you needed the reminder, Clarkson admits that “Texas women do it bigger” and she’s “rolling like Tina.” This one screams for a car karaoke session.
6. Run – Foo Fighters
If a little anger and some metal get you going, Dave Grohl’s screaming vocals will surely get you there. “The rats are on parade/Another mad charade” are the perfect lyrics for envisioning your next meeting that should have been an email or for that meeting you could have skipped all together.
5. Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus
Wait. We know you rolled your eyes and sighed, but hear us out. First, no matter how bad your week might look, it is still probably less eventful and cringeworthy than anything Miley might have going on and second, you know you'll belt out that chorus at the top of your lungs while circling the parking lot looking for the best space.
4. All I Do is Win - DJ Khaled featuring T-Pain, Ludacris, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg
"All I do is win, win, win no matter what." Take that, Monday. If half of the NBA can use it to introduce their players, imagine what it could do for you as you are walking in on Monday.
3. Woke Up This Morning - Alabama 3
Tony Soprano said "…every day's a gift, it's just, why does it have to be a pair of socks?" And Mondays are the socks of the work week. Channel your inner boss man and take control of the week.
2. Run the World (Girls) - Beyoncé
There's a reason this song has been fodder for a million memes, but Beyoncé's battle call still resonates nearly a decade later. For all the boss ladies who've been called bossy, this one is for you.
1. Indestructible - Disturbed
We're not saying that going to work is like going into battle, but let's be honest - some days it sure feels that way. If your week is looking like a lost cause perhaps finding some "determination that is incorruptible" is just what it takes to get to Friday. It's the perfect tune for those dark days when you need some armor.
